Long-term inflammation of the pancreas that damages both its digestive (enzyme) and hormone (insulin) functions. As of May 19, 2024, the pancreatitis itself is rated under DC 7347 based on pain episodes per year, hospitalizations, and maldigestion/malabsorption — the minimum compensable rating is 30% (there is no 10% level). Any diabetes caused by the pancreatic damage is rated separately under DC 7913 and combined with the pancreatitis rating.
The VA rates this condition based on the type and intensity of treatment you require. Higher ratings correspond to more aggressive treatment regimens, such as daily medication, insulin dependence, or the need for ongoing medical management.

You have daily episodes of abdominal or mid-back pain requiring three or more hospitalizations per year, with pain managed by a physician, and maldigestion and malabsorption requiring dietary restriction and pancreatic enzyme supplementation. Any pancreatogenic diabetes is rated separately under DC 7913.
