The inability to completely empty the bladder, requiring catheterization or causing overflow incontinence. Often caused by neurological conditions, medications, or prostatic obstruction. The VA rates chronic urinary retention under voiding dysfunction or obstructed voiding criteria based on the severity of symptoms and need for catheterization.
The VA rates this condition based on how often symptoms occur and how severe each episode is. The examiner will ask about the frequency, duration, and intensity of your episodes, as well as how they affect your ability to work.
