Interstitial Cystitis (Bladder Pain Syndrome)

A chronic bladder condition that causes bladder pressure, bladder pain, and sometimes pelvic pain. The VA rates interstitial cystitis based on how often you need to urinate or whether you need an appliance or absorbent materials.

Rating Levels

Your interstitial cystitis requires the use of an appliance or wearing absorbent materials that must be changed more than 4 times per day. This is the maximum rating under voiding dysfunction.

What the VA looks for

Use of an appliance (catheter) or absorbent materials
Materials changed more than 4 times per day
Severe bladder pain and urgency documented
Significant impact on employment and daily functioning
Medical documentation of frequency and severity

Common Pitfalls

⚠Not keeping a voiding diary that tracks how often you urinate during the day and how many times you wake up at night — the VA rating is based directly on these numbers.
⚠Not getting a cystoscopy or urodynamic study to confirm the diagnosis — the VA may question the severity of symptoms without objective testing.
