You have Lyme disease with serious lasting effects on your joints, nervous system, or heart. You have significant daily limitations and frequent medical treatment.

Significant joint destruction or chronic arthritis
Serious neurological deficits (encephalopathy, neuropathy)
Cardiac involvement requiring treatment
Major limitation of daily activities
Frequent medical visits and ongoing treatment

Common Pitfalls

⚠Not documenting the initial tick bite or rash during service — if you were in a tick-endemic area, buddy statements and unit records can help establish exposure.
⚠Failing to claim each affected body system separately — Lyme disease can cause joint problems, heart conduction issues, and neurological conditions, each of which may be rated individually.
⚠Not getting tested with both ELISA and Western blot — the VA follows the two-tier testing protocol, and a single positive ELISA is not enough.
