Paralysis or severe dysfunction of the median nerve, which controls sensation and movement in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger. Advanced cases go beyond typical carpal tunnel symptoms to include significant muscle wasting and loss of hand function. The dominant (major) hand receives higher ratings at moderate and above levels. Complete paralysis produces the classic "ape hand" deformity with inability to make a fist.
The VA rates this condition based on how much it affects your ability to work and carry out daily activities. The examiner will focus on the functional limitations your condition causes, not just the diagnosis itself.
