A pre-malignant condition where an abnormal protein (M-protein or paraprotein) is detected in the blood, produced by a small clone of plasma cells in the bone marrow. MGUS itself may not cause symptoms but requires lifelong monitoring because it can progress to multiple myeloma or other blood cancers. The VA rates MGUS based on its clinical impact.
The VA rates this condition based on the type, severity, and frequency of your symptoms. The examiner will evaluate your specific symptoms and how they affect your daily life and ability to work.
