Loss or reduction of the sense of smell due to damage to the first cranial nerve. Common after traumatic brain injury, blast exposure, or nasal surgery. Also affects taste perception since smell and taste are closely linked.
The VA rates this condition based on how much it affects your ability to work and carry out daily activities. The examiner will focus on the functional limitations your condition causes, not just the diagnosis itself.

Rating criteria are defined in 38 CFR 4.124a, DC 8205 (by analogy). This guide presents a plain-language summary and is not a substitute for the full regulatory text. Always consult a VSO or VA-accredited attorney for case-specific advice.
Complete loss of smell (anosmia) — you cannot detect odors at all. This also significantly reduces your sense of taste and creates safety risks (inability to smell smoke, gas leaks, or spoiled food).
