After your spleen is removed (splenectomy), your immune system is permanently weakened because the spleen helps fight certain types of bacteria. This puts you at lifelong risk for serious infections. The VA assigns a minimum 20% rating for spleen removal, with higher ratings if you have complications.
The VA rates this condition based on the type and intensity of treatment you require. Higher ratings correspond to more aggressive treatment regimens, such as daily medication, insulin dependence, or the need for ongoing medical management.
