Bladder damage caused by radiation therapy, usually for prostate or pelvic cancer. Symptoms include blood in the urine, frequent urination, and bladder pain. The VA rates radiation cystitis based on how severe your bleeding is, how often you urinate, and what treatment you need.

Rating Levels

You have severe radiation cystitis with recurrent heavy bleeding requiring hospitalization or transfusion. You may need continuous bladder irrigation, repeated surgical interventions, or urinary diversion. Your bladder capacity is severely reduced.

Recurrent severe hematuria requiring hospitalization or transfusion
Severely reduced bladder capacity on urodynamics
Multiple surgical interventions (fulguration, embolization)
Absorbent materials changed more than 4 times per day
Consideration for urinary diversion or cystectomy

⚠Not documenting the causal link between radiation therapy and bladder symptoms — your medical records must show that the cystitis developed after radiation treatment for a service-connected cancer.
