Clouding of the natural lens of the eye that affects vision. The VA rates cataracts based on visual impairment. If surgery has been performed, the rating is based on post-surgical visual acuity.

Rating Levels

Your cataracts have caused significant visual impairment or you have complications from cataract surgery causing decreased visual function.

What the VA looks for

Significant visual impairment
Aphakia (absence of lens without replacement)
Surgical complications causing decreased vision
Difficulty with reading, driving, or work tasks

Common Pitfalls

⚠Not understanding that cataracts are rated on visual impairment, not the cataract itself — after successful surgery with a lens implant, the rating is based on the resulting visual acuity.
⚠Not documenting pre- and post-surgical visual acuity to show any residual impairment after cataract surgery.
⚠Not filing for complications from cataract surgery such as posterior capsule opacification, cystoid macular edema, or retinal detachment as separate issues.
⚠Not connecting cataracts to military service exposure to UV radiation, blast injuries, or steroid medications used for other service-connected conditions.
