Amputation of the arm below the elbow, removing the hand and part or all of the forearm while preserving the elbow joint. The VA assigns fixed ratings based on the level of the amputation within the forearm and whether it is the dominant or non-dominant arm.

Rating Levels

You have amputation of the forearm on your dominant side above the insertion of the pronator teres. This is a high forearm amputation near the elbow on the dominant arm, causing severe functional loss.

Common Pitfalls

⚠Not specifying the exact level of amputation — the rating depends on whether the amputation is above or below the insertion of the pronator teres muscle. Operative reports must document the amputation level precisely.
⚠Not requesting SMC — forearm amputations qualify for special monthly compensation at various levels. Make sure all applicable SMC is adjudicated.
