Understand what the VA looks for at each rating level — loading conditions…
A spinal disc condition (herniated, bulging, or degenerative discs) that can cause back pain and nerve symptoms. The VA can rate IVDS either under the General Rating Formula for the Spine (range of motion) or based on how many incapacitating episodes you have per year — whichever gives you the higher rating.
The VA rates this condition based on how often symptoms occur and how severe each episode is. The examiner will ask about the frequency, duration, and intensity of your episodes, as well as how they affect your ability to work.
