A determination that the foot has lost all effective function, meaning the veteran would be equally well served by amputation with a suitable prosthesis. Loss of use does not require actual amputation — it is a functional determination. This entitles the veteran to special monthly compensation (SMC) in addition to the schedular rating.

Rating Levels

You have loss of use of one foot, meaning there is no effective function remaining. You would be equally well served by an amputation stump with a suitable prosthetic appliance. This determination entitles you to special monthly compensation (SMC-k) at a rate above the schedular percentage.

Common Pitfalls

⚠Not understanding that loss of use does not require amputation — if your foot is present but nonfunctional (due to paralysis, severe deformity, or chronic nonhealing wounds), you can still qualify for loss-of-use benefits.
