A determination that the hand has lost all effective function, meaning the veteran would be equally well served by amputation at the wrist with a suitable prosthesis. Loss of use does not require actual amputation — it is based on functional capability. This can result from severe nerve damage, multiple finger amputations, crush injuries, or advanced arthritis. It entitles the veteran to special monthly compensation.
The VA rates this condition based on how much it affects your ability to work and carry out daily activities. The examiner will focus on the functional limitations your condition causes, not just the diagnosis itself.
