You have severe lasting effects from a parasitic infection with significant organ damage, chronic anemia, or other serious complications that greatly limit your daily life.

What the VA looks for

Severe organ damage (liver fibrosis, portal hypertension)
Chronic anemia requiring treatment
Significant weight loss or malnutrition
Major limitation of daily activities
Frequent medical treatment or hospitalization

Common Pitfalls

⚠Not getting stool ova and parasite tests during active symptoms — some parasites are only detectable intermittently, so multiple specimens may be needed.
⚠Failing to document service in tropical or endemic regions — deployment records, travel orders, and unit histories establish your exposure.
⚠Not claiming organ damage separately — liver fibrosis from schistosomiasis, lung involvement from strongyloides, or chronic anemia can each be rated under their respective body systems.
⚠Assuming that antiparasitic treatment cured all effects — chronic organ damage and immune sensitization can persist after the parasite is eliminated.
