An infection of the female reproductive organs (uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries) that can cause chronic pelvic pain, scarring, and fertility problems. The VA rates PID based on ongoing symptoms and how well treatment controls them.

Common Pitfalls

⚠Not connecting PID to in-service STI exposure or infections contracted during military service. Obtain your service treatment records showing any in-service infections.
⚠Failing to document long-term residuals like chronic pelvic pain, adhesions, and tubal damage even after the initial infection has been treated.
⚠Not filing for secondary conditions such as infertility, ectopic pregnancy risk, chronic pelvic pain, or depression resulting from PID complications.
⚠Underreporting symptom severity. Be specific about how pelvic pain affects your ability to work, exercise, and perform daily activities.
