Scars anywhere on the body that are painful on examination or unstable (the skin over the scar breaks down repeatedly). The VA rates based on the number of painful or unstable scars.

How the VA rates this condition

The VA rates this condition based on how often symptoms occur and how severe each episode is. The examiner will ask about the frequency, duration, and intensity of your episodes, as well as how they affect your ability to work.

Rating Levels

You have five or more scars that are unstable or painful. This is the maximum schedular rating under DC 7804. Remember that if any scar is both unstable AND painful, an additional 10 percent is added.

What the VA looks for

Five or more painful or unstable scars documented
Complete scar inventory with each scar described
Pain and/or instability documented for each scar
Note whether any scars are both painful AND unstable
Photographs of all scars included in exam record

Common Pitfalls

⚠Not reporting ALL painful scars — each surgical scar, injury scar, and burn scar should be identified.
⚠Not documenting that scars are painful on examination (tell the examiner).
⚠Not documenting instability — if skin breaks down or peels over the scar, that counts.
⚠Not claiming the additional 10% when a scar is BOTH painful AND unstable.
