A malabsorption condition that occurs when a significant portion of the small intestine has been surgically removed or is nonfunctional. The VA rates short bowel syndrome based on the severity of malabsorption, nutritional deficiencies, and how often symptoms interfere with daily activities.
The VA rates this condition based on how often symptoms occur and how severe each episode is. The examiner will ask about the frequency, duration, and intensity of your episodes, as well as how they affect your ability to work.
