Amputation of the thumb at various levels. The thumb is the most functionally important digit, responsible for opposition grip, pinch, and grasp. The VA rates thumb amputation based on the level of the amputation and whether it is on the dominant or non-dominant hand. Higher amputations and metacarpal resection receive higher ratings.
The VA rates this condition based on objective clinical measurements and test results. The examiner will use standardized tests or lab values to determine the severity of your condition rather than relying primarily on subjective symptom reports.

Rating criteria are defined in 38 CFR 4.71a, DC 5152. This guide presents a plain-language summary and is not a substitute for the full regulatory text. Always consult a VSO or VA-accredited attorney for case-specific advice.
You have amputation of the thumb with metacarpal resection (removal of part or all of the thumb metacarpal bone) on your dominant (major) hand. This is the highest rating for single thumb amputation, reflecting the severe loss of hand function.
