Amputation of the thumb at various levels. The thumb is the most functionally important digit, responsible for opposition grip, pinch, and grasp. The VA rates thumb amputation based on the level of the amputation and whether it is on the dominant or non-dominant hand. Higher amputations and metacarpal resection receive higher ratings.

Rating Levels

You have amputation of the thumb with metacarpal resection (removal of part or all of the thumb metacarpal bone) on your dominant (major) hand. This is the highest rating for single thumb amputation, reflecting the severe loss of hand function.
