Toe Amputation

Surgical or traumatic removal of one or more toes. The VA assigns fixed ratings based on which toe was amputated and the level of the amputation. The great (big) toe receives higher ratings than the other toes because of its importance in balance and walking.

Common Pitfalls

⚠Not specifying the level of amputation — the rating depends on whether the metatarsal head was also removed. Make sure operative reports and imaging clearly document the amputation level.
⚠Not claiming phantom pain separately — if you experience phantom limb pain, tingling, or sensation in the amputated toe(s), this may warrant a separate neurological rating.
⚠Forgetting to claim residual scars — amputation scars that are painful, unstable, or limit function can receive a separate compensable rating.
