Bleeding inside the eye, which can occur in the anterior chamber (hyphema), vitreous cavity, or retina. The VA rates intraocular hemorrhage based on the residual visual impairment after the hemorrhage has been treated or resolved.

Rating Levels

Your intraocular hemorrhage has caused severe residual visual impairment. You have significant vision loss from retinal detachment, macular damage, or intractable glaucoma caused by the hemorrhage.

What the VA looks for

Severe visual acuity loss (20/200 or worse)
Retinal detachment requiring surgical repair
Significant macular damage from sub-retinal hemorrhage
Intractable secondary glaucoma
Multiple surgical interventions documented

Common Pitfalls

⚠Not connecting the hemorrhage to service — intraocular hemorrhage can result from blast injuries, blunt trauma, hypertension, or diabetic retinopathy, all of which may have service-connected origins.
⚠Not waiting for the hemorrhage to fully resolve before the C&P exam — visual impairment may worsen or improve as the blood clears, so the timing of evaluation matters. Request an exam after the acute phase has stabilized.
⚠Not filing for secondary complications — intraocular hemorrhage can cause glaucoma, retinal detachment, and epiretinal membrane formation that each warrant separate evaluation.
⚠Not documenting the functional impact of floaters — persistent vitreous floaters from hemorrhage can significantly affect reading, driving, and work even when visual acuity appears only mildly reduced.
