Rating Levels

Your menstrual irregularities cause symptoms not controlled by continuous treatment, such as severe bleeding or pain that persists despite medication.

What the VA looks for

Severe menorrhagia despite treatment (soaking through protection)
Debilitating dysmenorrhea not relieved by medication
Anemia from chronic heavy blood loss
Missed work or school due to menstrual symptoms
Multiple treatment approaches attempted

Common Pitfalls

⚠Not tracking and reporting the severity of bleeding objectively. Document the number of pads or tampons used per hour, episodes of flooding, and blood clot size.
⚠Failing to get blood work showing anemia (low hemoglobin, low ferritin) related to heavy menstrual bleeding, which provides objective evidence of severity.
⚠Not connecting menstrual irregularities to in-service causes such as stress, physical training intensity, military sexual trauma, or medications taken during service.
⚠Overlooking the impact of severe menstrual symptoms on employment and daily function. If you miss work or cannot function during your period, document every instance.
