A condition where the uterus drops down from its normal position into or through the vaginal canal because the pelvic floor muscles and ligaments are weakened. The VA rates uterine prolapse based on the degree of prolapse.

Rating Levels

You have severe or complete uterine prolapse that a pessary cannot adequately manage, with significant symptoms.

What the VA looks for

Third or fourth-degree prolapse documented
Uterus protruding beyond vaginal opening at rest
Pessary ineffective or not tolerated
Significant urinary or bowel symptoms
Surgical repair recommended or performed

Common Pitfalls

⚠Not requesting a pelvic exam that specifically documents the degree of prolapse using a standardized grading system (POP-Q). The degree of prolapse determines the rating.
⚠Failing to document associated symptoms such as urinary incontinence, difficulty with bowel movements, pelvic pressure, and low back pain that accompany prolapse.
⚠Not connecting uterine prolapse to in-service causes such as heavy lifting, physical training, pregnancies during service, or pelvic injuries.
⚠Not filing separately for urinary incontinence or stress incontinence as a secondary condition, which is very common with uterine prolapse.
